The Auvergne is a non-coastal region which is situated in the centre of the Massif Central of which Clermont-Ferrand is the capital.
The dramatically rugged countryside is made up of extinct volcanoes, forests, rivers, lakes, mountains and rocky gorges. The departments in Auvergne are: Puy de Dome (dept 63), Haute Loire (dept 43), Cantal (dept 15) and Allier (dept 03).
The region is famous for its dairy farming and the production of cheeses such as bleu d'Auvergne and Cantal. Tourist attractions include Romanesque churches and medieval castles skiing, hand-gliding and walking.
